Personal growth is a natural process; it happens as you grow in life through your varied experiences.

Personal development can be termed as something that is intentional, where you actively work on yourself, improving yourself.

For instance:

  • Personal growth happens when you experience a life event, you fail, you learn and grow with time through live vivid experiences
  • Personal development is when you decide to grow in some aspect, when you choose it, consciously.

    For example:
  • If  you fail at something, you learn naturally and note the lessons and remember them through past experiences or if people around you. That is growth.
  • If you pick a book to read how to manage your finances or build your business, then that is intentional with a purpose. That is development.

Personal Note from Dr. Paras

Life hasn't been easy for me either, like several of others. From starting a coaching company, learning along the way, helping other coaches soar high, extending my company globally, and travelling across the world. It hasn't come easy.

There are two types of personal growth. The one that is happening as you are living every day, certain events become your teachers, and some moments turn into lessons. You learn along the way. The other one is rapid and meaningful, and you will have to choose it in order to experience it.

Growth is honestly optional if it happens only when you choose to work for yourself. Nothing or nobody hands it over to you. Once you take control of your life, the progress that you see is a ripple effect of the same.

It is not something big or complex. In fact, it is simple and mostly happening in the background if you take it that way. It is not about becoming perfect; it is what you become along the way.

Recently I celebrated my 13 years on my fitness journey. 13 years of failing, trusting the process, restarting again and then reaching your goal. At times, the goal is the same, your method and approach keeps changing, in simpler words, you evolve with time. You figure out, as you commit to something. The personal growth process is not perfect, it gets better with time

I believe personal growth has become very important in today's fast changing world, where people are now brands themselves. When we often talk about personal branding, what does it mean? You present yourself in a certain manner that aligns to your brand. Do you feel successful people simply become successful with their work actions? Probably not. It is what they do everyday, what habits they have and the routines they follow. Your ability to quickly adapt, grow, learn new skills, face a challenge is all part of your personal development skills. If we stay the same, we have a risk of being left behind not just in our careers, but also how we think, solve issues and processes happening around the world. I do not mean to say run every race, it is to do what resonates with you and upgrade with time.

For me, since I started growing my business, the biggest challenge was to come out of my comfort zone, travel often, and market my work. No matter what you do, dealing with new spaces and new people is a skill that is a must. For that you first need to work on yourself and develop personal development skills. It begins with small things, more listening, less reacting, and being open to feedback.
Once you settle on your personal development theory, you begin to know yourself first. It was uncomfortable, and I didn't like it at first. But it is your first sign of growth.

Development is not just learning new skills, it is also knowing yourself. That reflects in your work. You begin to notice your behaviours, you reflect often.

It is quite personal, actually, and no two people have the same life graph. You can choose any one trait you wish to build and watch how it transforms you.
Social media is one nasty space; it depends how you use it. Use it as a tool or get into self-doubt and compare. One formula for growth I have always believed is always A Vs A and Not A vs. B. It is You vs. You!

Personal growth doesn't happen with comparison; it only demeans you. If you have positive self-talk, a stronger inner voice, you will know what your limits are and your strengths, and then you do not need a scale. One thing I must admit is having a support system add values to your journey.

One important element is dealing with failures. In your personal development journey you will find times when you quit, are not happy with the progress, feel clueless and also overwhelmed. Know that it is important to always analyse your mental status, talk to someone and know that there is always a way out.

I believe it takes time and it keeps building one after another, if you choose goals that align to your interest, you will be able to do it! It doesn't end with one final step, it keeps evolving. There are people who follow their passions at 80, start new hobbies at 40, work on a dream from 10. If you motivate yourself, then it is a fulfilling road ahead.

Personal development in today's world is the need of the hour and every person is trying to upgrade themselves. The ones who are realistic, have clear pathways, are consistent, set small goals and show up are the ones that stand out.

If I had to share a message for you, it would be, this is the right time to follow your passions, pick a hobby and improve your health, because there are resources freely available, and all you need is discipline. Aren't we more privileged?
