Personal Note By Dr. Paras

Emotional intelligence (EQ) is often talked about, and it is often not noticed until it goes missing. Nowadays its real value shows up in everyday life and work. The importance of emotional intelligence lies in how we understand us and those around us. How we process intense situations. And the way we do, impacts us.

For me as a personal level it is never a perfect process and we are always mastering it yet. The  importance of emotional intelligence begins with really being aware. As simple as noticing your thoughts when you take a coffee break, when you are quietly sitting in your room. You will begin to understand your own emotions and make better decisions, view situations objectively. For instance, once I started mindfully noticing it whenever I could, I recognized what makes me upset, happy and anxious. Once you do, these begin to act as tools and you act better. You process situations better.
This not only reduces conflicts that are not needed, it brings a balance where you begin to choose what is in your control and what isn't.
Life is unpredictable, but EQ helps you handle it with more calm and control.

The importance of emotional intelligence is such that it also helps you build empathy. Empathy is when you begin to understand how someone else is feeling, you don't judge and it leads to stronger relationships and partnerships.  Whether it’s family, friends, or colleagues at the workplace, people always value being heard, loved and understood. EQ helps you do that best.

In the workplace, the importance of emotional intelligence is more needed. Because you do deal with a lot of people and their emotions all the time, along with yours. Your technical skills may help you get in, but people skills are mandatory too. And unfortunately there is no one way. You discover your own ways as each one of us has a unique construct.  EQ will help you work with people efficiently.

When you manage your emotions better, you decide better, think better, listen better and often deal with situations in an objective manner. The  importance of emotional intelligence also shows in leadership at the workplace.

A good leader understands, is more inclusive, has healthy boundaries and resolves not as people issues but is situation focused. They know when to share an opinion, when to challenge, when to support and when to bring our the best in each. Teams that are led by emotionally intelligent leaders are motivated, happily thrive and are more productive.

The  importance of emotional intelligence matters in resolving conflicts too.
Disagreements happen at personal and professional level, but in my experience, if you know yourself underneath, you won't take things personally, you are more objective and tend to think rationally.

EQ builds better with time and practice. Over time you can master it with patience and clarity. The importance of emotional intelligence is such that it is not about perfecting it but small changes, more listening, more pausing, more calm and then processing people and situations objectively, not every time but getting better at it. Begin with small changes, they make a big difference.

In the end, EQ lies in how it shapes not just your work but overall quality of life. Better mental construct, stronger relationships, better decisions and deal with complicated situations with empathy.
If we have this innate ability why not exercise it?
